The packaging is accomplished like ‘normal’ TAG Heuer watch. The difference is that in place of the standard white sleeve and plain black outer box, there is a bright blue sleeve and a patterned grey and black box. Compared to a 41mm Carrera 1887, the Connected is both thinner (12.8mm thick vs. 15.7mm) and lighter (52g for the Connected watch head vs. 111g for the watch + strap of the 1887).
When you turn your wrist to look at the time, the Connected automatically wakes up from its power-saving mode and comes back to full brightness. There is a half-beat delay in the watch waking up when compared to the near-instantaneous Apple Watch. Not a crucial issue, but one that Android should address over time.
The screen is still legible in power-saving mode, as you can see below. If anything we’d rather the screen stayed ‘awake’ for a few second longer than it does. Yes, another compromise on battery life.

With interchangeable straps, lugs and buckles, the owner can decide what they want on their smartwatch and can also buy different customizable straps and lugs as per their needs. TAG Heuer also announced that the Modular concept isn’t limited to the Smartwatch alone and will appear in their upcoming mechanical timepieces as well.
Re-engineered hardware for Titanium 5
We all remember that the first Connected essentially had a plastic case that was done to aid all the hardware running inside. With the Connected 2, the challenge was humungous because it was now a full metal body. Metal, as we know interferes with the smartwatch’s communication systems (Wifi, Bluetooth & NFC), but Intel worked closely with TAG and reengineered the Wifi and NFC chip to support the smartwatch. The chips also work 2x faster than the previous smartwatch! A bit of technical innovation here as well.

Tag Heuer connected android wear 2.0
The Connected 2 comes with the latest Android Wear OS 2.0 straight out of the box, customized specifically for TAG Heuer. This comes with new features like standalone apps that don’t need a smartphone to pair with, can independently connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network, GPS for navigation and also introduces support for Android Pay, i.e., wireless payments without having to use your phone or your wallet. Setting up the Connected is straightforward. The first step is to download the Android Wear app from the Apple App store. You then simply open the app and follow the instructions.
Size does matter in watch
What about the size? It’s surprising how much difference cutting back on a few millimeters makes. The body isn’t as wide, and therefore it’s so much better proportioned than the Connected Modular 45. The horns hug the case, and the strap flows from them in a more visually appealing way. The Modular 45 is much more chunky, and alongside the Modular 41 the screen looks massive, yet in reality it’s just 0.2mm wider. Tag Heuer has deftly managed to avoid making the watch too small too. The 38mm Apple Watch skews in this direction, and the 42mm version is far more preferable unless your wrist is incredibly dainty. We think it’s likely to appeal to both men and women because of this

An exciting new dial with AMOLED Display
Tag Heuer has added a ceramic bezel to the Connected Modular 41, in either a black or polished finish, that adds to the durability. It surrounds a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen with a 390 x 390 pixel resolution. This is a little lower than the Modular 45, but the reduced size means the pixel density is higher, resulting in a sharper screen. It looked great indoors, and the brightness has been increased for outdoor use.
We experienced no problems viewing the screen outside, helped by an anti-reflective coating added to the crystal, and the effective automatic brightness adjustment. We also cannot overstate the difference the thick slab of sapphire crystal over the display makes to the viewing experience. There is a stunning sheen to sapphire that glass or plastic lacks, which adds considerably to how great the watch looks in person.

While most smartwatches go completely dark when not in use, the TAG Heuer is primarily a watch…and watches have dials that can always been seen. While this feature comes at the cost of battery life, it’s the right compromise to reinforce the Connected’s ‘real watch’ status.

They’re taking the customisation game to the next level.

The Modular 45 was produced in close conjunction with Intel, and once again it’s the company’s technology platform inside the Modular 41. Memory has been increased from 512MB in the Modular 45 to 1GB, and storage increased to 8GB. The watch connects to headphones using Bluetooth, and we tried it out in the gym. Downloading Google Play Music playlists is a pain, as it never completed despite multiple restarts. This may be a software problem though, as we’ve experienced the same problems on other watches.
